No matter how much we embrace our own individual moral compass, it feels like there is a growing disconnect between the set of values some of our institutions live by and our own.
In the absence of examples of just behaviour from those institutions we are likely to justify and embellish our own moral compass, however unaligned with the rest of society. | Moral Compass 1Mixed media on artist's wood panel.

Making a fresh start doesn’t mean consigning our current selves to the archives of shame. It’s not a process of whitewashing the past, rather an opportunity to liberate the present best versions of ourselves for an enlightened future. We are made of many colours, each one worthy of individual celebration. A gentle, yet surprisingly invigorating lilac evokes a sensitive optimism. |

Red and Blue WindowAcrylic on artist's wood panel.
50 x 50cm
SOLD
Are we outside looking in towards a freshly distilled emotional state of being, or inside looking out, visualising an intensity of release . The red, with it’s powerfully hypnotic warmth entices and invites us to submerge ourselves in it - to surrender to it’s passion. The blue, an ever present, unchanging pillar of stability has a reassuring presence. | Complementary Opposition 1Acrylic on artist's wood panel. SOLD
30 x 30cm
Perhaps now more than ever it should be recognised that extremes needn’t cause conflict. Diametric opposition could ignite a process of alchemy to ultimately foster greater harmony and understanding.
The compatablity of opposing colours demonstrate the possibility of tranquility and in these paintings the use of spray paint merges those opposing colours with appropriate subtelty. | Complementary Opposition 2Acrylic on artist's wood panel.

Binary politics encourages us to pick sides, dismiss and despise 'the other'. Everything must be black or white, either - or, mutually exclusive! In order to experience a meaningful period of light and strength it is sometimes necessary to understand the opposite. Multiple layers of acrylic paint and textured gesso which have been finely sanded in selected areas add depth and aim to symbolise the complex, layered nature of the human psyche. Silver leaf offers a 'glow' of hope and enlightenment. | TENETS - quadriptychMixed media on board.
4 separate panels, 10 x 40cm each. SOLD.
Can be hung separately or as a quadriptych.

The collaged areas are prints of some of my original paintings. The selective wearing away of some of the layers and mat varnish create the resulting subtle sheen and depth. | Trying Hard Not To DetachMixed media on board

During a period of self isolation when most feel trapped, there are some for whom sanctioned social distancing is a chance to emotionally distance. Despite the recognition of the importance of emotional connection to mental health, keeping tethered to reality through new ways of connecting is hard.

A seemingly fossilised and inert past imprints and fertilises the now; it’s tendrils inextricably linking our inner dark and irrepressible glow, becoming a ‘mesh’ of strength. Enriched, enlivened and emboldened, the soul rises.
Gesso creates the sculptural elements, while genuine gold leaf provides the lasting warmth and radiance that can’t be replicated with gold paint. | Rising 2Mixed media on board.

Happiness sometimes feels alien. If we compartmentalise it in a more familiar box with it’s certain and definite borders it can feel safer.
The flat, opaque black areas signify that unchanging safety in stagnation. To contrast that reliability of solidity, the lighter brighter areas with effects produced from diluted acrylic paint have less reliable boundaries.... | A Box To Belong 2Mixed media on board

Our economically wealthy societies are closeted in the sheen of the superficially beautiful. Our claim that we are desensitised by reports of suffering ‘elsewhere’ is a convenient excuse not to have to analyse our lack of compassion. A global community is just a concept. Until it becomes a brutally obvious reality that we are all connected, for better or worse, we’ll perhaps go on clinging to the comforting veneer of tradition and beauty.... |

Emerging from the protection and comfort of the known, we grow tentatively towards a horizon, which offers a chance to glow.
Gesso forms the low relief sculptural elements, and the removal and application of multiple layers of acrylic paint provide depth. In these paintings water plays an equal role to the paint as a medium in lending an ‘other worldly’ quality to the pieces. | Out Of Hiding 4Mixed media on board
