Our claim that we are desensitised by reports of suffering ‘elsewhere’ is a convenient excuse not to have to analyse our lack of compassion. A global community is just a concept. Until it becomes a brutally obvious reality that we are all connected, for better or worse, we’ll perhaps go on clinging to the comforting veneer of tradition and beauty.... Indeed there is an occasional dare to hope that the suppressed fossils of our past may reemerge from the inertia, ’gilded’ with the courage to harvest those parts that infuse us with the confidence to live free....
